Ubuntu Linux

This will be a collection of notes to remember what to install in what way to build a nice server using Ubuntu Linux. It was tested (in not a very carefull way) with the Gutsy Gibbon release (7.10) of Ubuntu.

• iptables - Routing and firewall functionality (firestarter is a nice and easy to use graphical frontend)

• SimpleBackup - Easy to use backup tool ¹⁾

• Easytag - Edit e.g. mp3 tags.
• Yakuake - Quake-like console. Use Yakuake Simple Theme, as Gnome does not support the transparency stuff of the KDE-based Yakuake.

• PSI - Instant Messenger. Install qca-tls to enable SSL support and sox to use play for sounds.
• Scite - Fast, small and widely adjustable editor (also available for Windows ²⁾
• vim - Another editor, but this one does not need X
• Kile - Latex IDE.
• Latex - texlive* packages (sure?)
• sux - export display when switching to different user on commandline
• w3m - console webbrowser. w3m-img adds image support
• gpm - General Purpose Mouseinterface (or something close to that) - to enable mouse support in console (tty)

• Hugin - Panoramamaker, can use enblend for “soft edges” and autopano-sift for automation
