BIOS flashing trick

Updating the BIOS of a PC or Laptop is hard, if you run only Linux on it. Without installing Windows or using Wine, what is not suggested by the way, here is a trick to do the update anyways:

  1. Boot from a original VistaDVD, which came with the laptop or MSDNAA…
  2. Select the recovery console
  3. Plug in your USB Stick containing the flasher and the bios file
  4. c: (This drive should be the USB stick, if no Windows partition is available. If this does not work try the remaining 25 letters of the alphabet. The USB stick should be out there somewhere!)
  5. Execute the flashprogram. SPxyz.exe in my case on a HP dv5053EA (dv5000 series).
  6. Done. Reboot to Linux.
